Samsung Galaxy Tab announced for US Cellular

Fancy picking up a tablet device? Actually, the Apple iPad has been doing gangbusters sales for the longest time already ever since it was released, and so far there hasn’t been any real competition to this device that can challenge its lofty position. Well, not until now – Samsung’s Galaxy Tab might have a smaller screen size at 7-inches, but it certainly isn’t any slouch when it comes to performance, running on the iOS’ rival platform – we’re talking about the Google Android operating system.
Most recently, the Samsung Galaxy Tab was released by US Cellular, where it is capable of delivering a premium mobile entertainment experience on the go, without getting bogged down by a bulky device. After all, it tips the scales at just 13 ounces while measuring 12 millimeters thin. The Galaxy Tab will be able to fit in nicely into a pocket or purse, so both genders will be able to carry one without growing extra muscles overnight.

Apart from the aforementiond brilliant 7-inch enhanced TFT display screen, the Samsung Galaxy Tab is also powered by a speedy 1GHz Hummingbird Application processor that is capable of supporting 3D graphics as well as smooth Web browsing, followed by a 1.3 megapixel front camera and a 3 megapixel rear-facing camera (for video calling and photo taking purposes, obviously), alongside the Android 2.2 operating system that throws in full support for Adobe Flash Player 10.1.
One thing about the Samsung Galaxy Tab would be its similarity with Samsung’s very own Galaxy S smartphones, which would mean carrying Samsung’s Social Hub application that is capable of synchronizing a user’s Messaging and Contacts to initiate the sending and receiving of information, regardless of whether it is e-mail, instant messaging, social network updates or SMS messages. Not only that, calendar information from portal calendars, such as Google Calendar, and social networking services are displayed together in one calendar with two-way synchronization.
You will also benefit from services such as Google Maps Navigation (Beta) and Google Goggles amongst others. With Wi-Fi connectivity, you ought to be able to surf at your favorite coffee place without missing a beat. Any takers for the Galaxy Tab?

Launchy! Open Source Keystroke Launcher...

Launchy is a free cross-platform utility designed to help you forget about your start menu, the icons on your desktop, and even your file manager.
Launchy indexes the programs in your start menu and can launch your documents, project files, folders, and bookmarks with just a few keystrokes!
Once Launchy has been started, it hides in the background. You bring it forward by holding the alt key and tapping the space key. You then type in a few keys of the program you are searching for and hit enter once it has been found. You can also make Launchy dissappear again by hitting escape or alt+space.
Launchy is developed to run on XP, however you can try downloading the gdiplus.dll and unzipping it into your Launchy directory to get it to run with Win2000.

iPhone group text messaging – send 100 people an SMS for the price of 1

You don’t need to download any apps to send group text messages with your iPhone. Hidden away in iOS 4 is the ability to send group text messages, now this may not seem that exciting by default but here’s why it’s great: using group messaging, you can send 100 people a text message but it only counts as ONE sent text!

How to enable group text messaging on the iPhone

  • Tap on “Settings”
  • Select “Messages”
  • Tap the On switch next to “Group Messaging”
If recipients also enable group messaging, then everyone can have a massive group chat together at the expense of only one text message sent, regardless of the amount of users!
I came across this awesome tip (and the screenshot) on ZDNet’s The Apple Core blog, where it was independently verified with AT&T that sending group texts like this only counts as one sent message.
If you don’t have an unlimited texting plan, this is without a doubt the cheapest way to send a massive amount of texts between you and your friends.
Note that this group messaging feature may only be available to AT&T customers.

iPad to be Followed by the iBoard and iMat

Now that the iPad is here we have to wonder what Apple will launch next. The company seems interested in putting to good use that iPhone OS mobile platform so we might be in for some hot new products in the near future.

This year alone Apple will launch the Wi-Fi iPad versions in March and the 3G iPad models in April. Soon after, in June or July the company will launch the next-gen iPhone, the iPhone 4G but we want more.
Sources close to Cupertino have revealed two Apple projects that are currently being secretly developed. The iBoard and the iMat are based both on the iPad and will further explore the tablet world.
Just like the iPad is an iPhone on steroids the iBoard will be an iPad on steroids too. It will have all the functionalities of the iPad and the iPhone but it will come with a far more impressive touchscreen display. We expect the iBoard to sport at least a 17-inch display and run a next-generation iPhone OS version. Developers have plenty of time to conceive special apps for it as the iBoard is coming only in 2012 or later.

iHome iA100 Bluetooth Stereo System

If your home does not yet have a dock of sorts for iDevices, then you’re in luck. After all, it would be great for you to always get the latest and greatest devices (within budget, of course), don’t you think so? iHome intends to fulfill that need of yours with their newest release, which would be the iHome iA100 Bluetooth Stereo System. This unique Bluetooth stereo system will play nice with the iPad, iPhone and iPod with the help of App Enhancement. Touted to be the first device from iHome that was specially designed to offer iPad support as well as taking advantage of its unique capabilities, the inclusion of Bluetooth connectivity for wireless communication is a nice touch as well. You will also find Bongiovi Acoustics’ DPS technology thrown into the mix for enhanced sound, and app-enhanced functionality for use with iHome+Sleep and iHome+Radio. In a nutshell, the iA100 is capable of delivering superior audio quality and more features than any other docking alarm clock on the market to users. Surely you are now asking yourself, just how much is this? We won’t spoil it in the first paragraph, so you will need to read on after the jump for a better idea.

The app-enhanced iA100 Bluetooth-enabled device will also come with a built-in FM radio alarm clock for iPad, iPhone and docking iPod models. Whenever you hook up your preferred iDevice via Bluetooth through a secure simple pairing, the iA100 is a different beast altogether. It will turn into a wireless entertainment multi-tasker with a variety of great features, where among them includes a stand-alone speakerphone with echo cancellation, transforming just about all compatble Bluetooth enabled phones into a robust speakerphone for the home or office. Not only that, it is capable of streaming audio of your favorite music and movies, while customized connections with iHome’s free iHome+Sleep and iHome+Radio apps are a nice tough to have.
The asking price for the iA100 Bluetooth Stereo System for iPad, iPhone and iPod with App Enhancement? We would say that it will not break the bank at all, considering the $199 price tag which is pretty reasonable considering all that it offers on paper.

New Nokia smartphones to get new features faster

Nokia is changing the way it updates smartphones based on the latest version of Symbian. Instead of receiving big upgrades, the products will be upgraded on a more continual, incremental basis, Nokia said on Thursday.

For its updates, Nokia will no longer refer to Symbian 3 -- which is used on, for example, the N8 -- or the planned update Symbian 4, according to the company. Instead, much of the work that has been done to improve the user interface on what was version 4 will arrive sooner to existing products, new CEO Stephen Elop said during a conference call, but didn't elaborate on a more detailed schedule.

Symbian 3 is an improvement over previous versions of the much-maligned OS, but it still can't compete with the usability offered by Apple's iPhone iOS and Android-based smartphones.

The change is possible thanks to Nokia's decision to now solely focus on the Qt development platform, which is used to build user interfaces and applications, for both internal and external development. This will also be a boon for developers, according to Nokia.

Nokia's first MeeGo device will arrive in 2011, CEO confirms

Nokia will start shipping its first product based on the MeeGo operating system in 2011, new CEO Stephen Elop confirmed during a conference call on Thursday.

Elop, who became Nokia's CEO on Sept. 21, likes what he has seen of MeeGo since he took over the company, but it is clear that the product will arrive next year, he said, without going into any product details. Elop said one change he will make at the company is to start talking about new smartphones closer to the actual launch.

The MeeGo OS, announced in February, merges Intel's Moblin and Nokia's Maemo Linux-based OSes. Nokia and Intel hope that advanced smartphones, netbooks, connected TVs and tablet computers will all use the OS.

Halo Intersceptor is a car, copter, plane, and boat

I’m sure you are probably thinking that this is a pretty cool car. It sort of reminds me of the futuristic Audi that Will Smith drove around in I, Robot.
This concept auto, known as the Halo Intersceptor, is one of the most advanced cars that I have ever seen. In fact, it isn’t just a car, but a plane, boat, and helicopter. Yes, that does sound more like a cartoon than an actual car. Just to let you know, the Halo Interceptor doesn’t have any hidden wings or rotors like some spy car on M.A.S.K. That was a cartoon from the eighties, in case you don’t get that reference. Think about what would happen if G.I. Joe and Transformers were

FBI allegedly caught using GPS to spy on student

A California student got a visit from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation this week after he found a secret GPS tracking device on his car, and a friend posted photos of it online.
The post prompted wide speculation about whether the device was real, whether the young Arab-American was being targeted in a terrorism investigation and what the authorities would do.
It took just 48 hours to find out: The device was real, the student was being secretly tracked and the FBI wanted their expensive device back, the student told Hanls in an interview Wednesday.
The answer came when half-a-dozen FBI agents and police officers appeared at Yasir Afifi's apartment complex in Santa Clara, California, on Tuesday demanding he return the device.
Afifi, a 20-year-old U.S.-born citizen, cooperated willingly and said he'd done nothing to merit attention from authorities. Comments the agents made during their visit suggested he'd been under

Windows Phone 7 is the real Facebook phone

When Microsoft and Facebook announced that they were partnering to integrate Facebook and Bing for social network-powered search, it confirmed something I thought Monday: Windows Phone 7 is the real Facebook phone.
I don't know whether Facebook has a secret team working on a phone where they control the OS. But the company don't need one. It's already deeply integrated into Android and iOS. Now with the Microsoft partnership, it's tied to the most socially optimized smartphone ever brought to the market.

Thanko Updated Their Bracelet Battery

In 2007, Thanko released a bracelet battery that might not be that appealing for you. But this year, the company is again coming out with its wearable bracelet battery that looks identical to the previous model, but is now sporting the kind of style that will be perfect for a Batman costume.
This all-black bracelet comes in a thick wrist wrap that has a cable extension to connect to your mobile devices and charge them. New to this model is an adapter cable that will allow you to even

Martin Aircraft’s commercial jetpack looks to take flight

It is about time man flew among the birds – alone. We may not have the homes on the moon, or the flying cars that our totally reasonable childhood imaginations ensured us would be waiting for us when we grew up, but with a little luck and a lot of money, we might soon be able to scratch “jetpack” off of our bucket lists.
Imagine one day soon, you kiss the spouse good bye, walk the kids off to the school bus, then you prepare for the commute to work. But rather than sitting in traffic and squeezing your steering wheel in frustration as the car in front of you apparently believes the old adage of “speed kills”, so they are driving 15 MPH under the speed limit, you simply throw on your jetpack, terrify a few birds, and make it to work in record time. Sure there might be a few details that you would need to

Atlantic EGO iceBar2 Waterproof Speaker System for iPods

I believe that our Apple iPods are built to be durable, but they are not that durable. I’ve heard that thousands of cell phones are dropped into toilets everyday, so you can imagine that iPod’s are just as vulnerable. I don’t have a stat about how many iPods get flushed each day, but I imagine a nano would actually make it all the way to the ocean.
The iceBar2 is designed specifically to keep an iPod nano safe from water damage in any situation. Okay, not any situation, but up to three meters of water.
This iceBar2 Speaker System is a waterproof and shatterproof case which can protect the iPod from not only dust and scratches, and that wet foe: water.
You may note in the picture how the material is clear, but you might not know that it is also bulletproof. When you connect the iPod nano inside, the waterproof stereo speakers will play your tunes in any setting.
The iceBar 2 will certainly come in handy for the bathtub, or even a pool party. It is powered by four AAA batteries, and has an external power button so users can instantly turn the case on or off. This allows users to listen privately by adding their own earphones.

Babel Fisk: Read what you are hearing

There have been many advancements in speech-to-text in the last few years. I’m sure that I’ll probably speaking these posts instead of typing them in the next few years, provided I’m not disturbing others in the room.
I’m sure that the hearing impaired would most benefit from speech to text technology, and this is what the Babel Fisk is supposed to do.
Designed by Mads Hindhede, the Babel Fisk has microphones built into the frame in order to pick up the voice of a person in the line of sight, and then an embedded speech-to-text program will create the text that is projected inside of the lenses.
You can even program it to record the text to a flash memory card for later use. So you can literally record everything that you hear as a text file.
The name of Babel Fisk is clearly a tip of the hat to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. In that classic science-fiction satire, the characters had this tiny fish that they stuck in their ear known as a babel fish that could somehow miraculously translate any language spoken. Fisk apparently means “fish” in Danish.
Of course, this just has to be concept technology, and I’m not certain how well this would work, honestly. I mean, if you are with someone who is talking to much, would you literally be blinded by words?
